Salmonella Outbreak in 45 States Due to Pet Chickens,Salmonella

45 states including Texas and Oklahoma have reported cases of salmonella related to pet chickens. While keeping chickens as pets can be economical for families and educational for youth there is a risk of the animals carrying salmonella.
611 cases of the illness have been linked to the current outbreak, now considered the largest in the United States to date, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Symptoms of salmonella infection include abdominal cramps, fever and sudden onset diarrhea that can last for several days. Nausea, vomiting and headaches may also occur.
The CDC says all live poultry can carry salmonella so it is important to wash your hands well with soap and water after touching birds or their surroundings.
